Dragons, steamy romance and trials. I’ve had an obsession with Fourth Wing since it’s release. And I’m not alone, this fantasy sold over two million copies.

So what do you read after finishing Fourth Wing? How do you avoid the inevitable reading slump?

When the Moon Hatched is an incredible urban fantasy with dragons. This high fantasy features an angsty romance, fae and an awesome main character.

We follow Raeve, a valued Elding Blade of a rebellion group. Her job is to kill, complete orders and never get caught. But, the crown employs a renowned bounty hunter to capture a member of the Ath. And Raeve’s world is turned upside down.

2. Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

Don’t let the size put you off. This is an incredible high fantasy with dragons. It is more high fantasy than Fourth Wing, with a large info-dump. But this is an incredible fantasy.

A world divided. A queendom without an heir. An ancient enemy awakens.

The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction – but assassins are getting closer to her door.

A classic adventure story with a dragon. This is a charming read with a well-paced plot. And it’s not as drawn out as Lord of the Rings. And you don’t need to read LOTR to understand this. You could read as a fantasy standalone.

The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins. He is A Hobbit who lives in The Shire. One day he meets Gandalf and goes on an adventure.

A YA adventure story with elves, dragons and magic. The writing is quick and easy to read. This doesn’t have any spice, as it’s young adult. But this is still an incredible read.

We follow Eragon. He discovers a dragon egg in the forest. And it unhatches to reveal a dragon. The first to unhatch in many years.

Please don’t let the terrible movie adaptation put you off! It’s an excellent YA Fantasy book – the plot is gripping.

5. Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

Shape-shifting dragons, a curse and beautiful worldbuilding. This is an exquisite fantasy with a young princess and plenty of adventure

We follow Shiori. She is the only princess in Kiata. Shiori lives in a land where magic is banned. And demons are locked away inside a mountain. But forbidden magic runs through her veins.

Shiori normally conceals it. But on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, she loses control. And she attracts the attention of her stepmother Raikama.

6. A Dawn of Onyx by Kate Golden

A Dawn of Onyx is a new adult romantasy with dragons and magic. Plus it has an enemies to lovers romance.

We follow Arwen Valondale. She never expected to be the brave one, offering her life to save her brother’s. Now she’s been taken prisoner by the most dangerous kingdom on the continent, and made to use her rare magical abilities to heal the soldiers of the vicious Onyx King.

This is an addictive, fast-paced read with warring kingdoms and fae. An excellent start to the series.

A villainous main character who can transform into a dragon. This dark fantasy also has a forbidden romance and enemies to lovers.

When a training mishap accidentally unleashes a hidden magic inside her, Adara suddenly finds herself on the run.

I was unsure whether to include this. Technically, it includes Gryverns which are similar to dragons. Plus it includes spice and a slow-burn romance.

We follow Diem Bellator. She lives in a world colonized by the gods and ruled by the Descended, their cruel offspring. She yearns to escape her poor village. Her mother’s sudden disappearance—and the discovery of a dangerous secret about her past—offer Diem an unexpected opportunity to unlock the mysteries her mother left behind.

10. Heavenly Bodies by Imani Erriu

Dragons, magic and a morally grey main character. And it also includes a slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romance.

We follow Elara, she has been cursed by fate. A prophecy promises she will fall for a Star, and it will kill them both. But when one descends to wreak havoc on Elara’s Kingdom, she is forced to flee into the arms of her enemy in the neighbouring country.

Fireborne is one of the best dragon books. This is young adult but still a compelling fantasy romance.

An incredible new adult fantasy with dragons and steamy romance. And it has an amazing, sassy female main character.

We follow Elowen Atarah, Princess of Imirath. She is a princess with a link to five dragons. It should have been a blessing but it became her curse. The little girl in shackles became a knife-wielding woman with a thirst for retaliation.
Now, Queen of Aestilian, a secret kingdom she forged through strength and survival, Elowen needs a way to feed her rising population.

Fire with Fire is a ya fantasy book with dragons. This is similar to Eragon, as it features a dragon bond. It also has a strong female main character and a sibling rivalry.

We follow Dani and Eden Riviera. They were both born to slay dragons. And they couldn’t be more different. Dani wants a normal life and let’s training take a backseat. While training is always Eden’s priority. But they’ve always agreed on one thing — with dragons it’s either kill or be killed.

14. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Thorns and Roses is an incredible enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance. The writing style and steamy romance are very similar. Perfect for fans of Xaden and Violet.

We follow Feyre. She is poor and lives with her father and two sisters. She has to hunt to care for the family. One day she sees a deer and can’t resist killing it to sell. But it was actually a faerie she murdered. And the owner comes to kidnap her to live at the castle as punishment.

If you enjoyed the romance elements in Fourth Wing then you’ll love this series.

15. Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

Sarah J Maas has a very similar writing style to Rebecca Yarros. While A Court of Thorns and Roses is more romance focused. Throne of Glass has more action. But it still includes an awesome hate-to-love romance, trials and a strong main character.

We follow Celaena Sardothien, an assassin. She is imprisoned in a horrific prison called Endovier. And one day the prince summons her to fight in a competition. The winner will become the king’s assassin.

16. Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Serpent and Dove is a compelling enemies to lovers romance. It features magic, and an urban setting.

We follow Louise, a witch living in Cesarine where witches are hunted and burned. Reid, a witch hunter, has always lived by the same principle – thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But Lou pulls a stunt and forces them into an impossible scenario – holy matrimony.

This is a compelling romance with easy to read writing. Perfect for fans of Fourth Wing.

Those born Ordinary are banished to preserve an Elite society. This makes Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity. When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials.

We follow Keera, a killer. As the King’s Blade, she is the most talented spy in the kingdom. And the King’s favoured assassin. When a mysterious figure called the Shadow starts moving against the Crown, Keera is forced to hunt the masked menace down. She crosses into the magical lands of the Fae, trying to discern if her enemy is Mortal, Elf, or a Halfling like her. But the Faeland is not what it seems.

19. One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

A high fantasy with a unique magic system, a gothic atmosphere and a romantic sub-plot. The romance is an incredible enemies to lovers romance. Plus, it features a monster with a similar relationship as Violet and Tairn.

In Blunder all magic comes at a price. We follow Elspeth. She touches a magical providence card and is possessed by the Nightmare. When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure Blunder from the dark magic infecting it.

20. Bride by Ali Hazelwood

This is more romance heavy. Perfect if you want a spicy enemies to lovers romance. The fantastical worldbuilding is lower, but this is still worth readying.

We follow Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest. She’s an outcast living anonymously with Huumnas. But she’s called upon to uphold a historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres.

From Blood and Ash is a spicy enemies to lovers romance. This is new adult and features an underdog as a main character. Perfect for fans of Violet.

The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched or looked upon or spoken to. And never to experience pleasure. A spicy enemies to lovers romance. This compelling series also features an intriguing mystery and an awesome main character.

We follow Elena. She’s a vampire hunter and she knows she’s the best. But the Archangel Raphael hires her for a job. And it’s clear failure is not an option – even if the task is impossible. 

If you enjoyed the romance between Xaden and Violence, you’ll love this book. This is also similar to Sarah J Maas, with Crescent City vibes.

23. The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

An excellent enemies to lovers romance. This best-selling series features a fast-paced adventure, trials and superpowers.

In this dystopian novel, blood defines your status. Reds are commoners. But silvers are the elite and have superpowers. The main character is red. But she has superpowers.

The Red Queen has received over a million reviews on GoodReads, and is still rated 4 stars. Fans love the fast-pace, plot twists and dystopian worldbuilding.

24. Dark Night, Golden Dawn by Allison Carr Waechter

An enemies to lovers romance with mythical beings. This has stunning worldbuilding and a fast pace.

Set in a city where the elite are powerful as gods. Harlow Krane wants nothing more than to recover from her most recent breakup. When the season begins, her Order needs her help. They offer to back off—if Harlow agrees to pair with their most eligible bachelor, Finn McKay. But Harlow has been burned by Finn before.

Laia finds an illegal sketchbook belonging to her brother.  The empire comes and takes him away. And she must locate the resistance and go on a perilous mission to save him.

27. Shatter me by Tahereh Mafi

The vibes in this book are very different to Fourth Wing. But this series features an incredible enemies to lovers romance.

Shatter me opens with the main character locked up for murder. She is unable to touch anyone. And she falls in love with the first person she is able to touch.

This features an angsty, ‘ will they, won’t they’ romance. Plus the writing style is unique. And different to any other book. Prose heavy, this is a book people either love or hate.

28. Gilded Ones by Namina Forna

This doesn’t feature dragons. But it has mythical creatures similar to dragons. Perfect for Fourth Wing fans. It also features a cast of badass, strong women. Plus the fast-paced plot makes this an addictive read.

16-year-old Deka lives in a village where all the girls undergo a blood ceremony. If their blood runs gold – they are impure.

Deka lived in fear of this ceremony. But then her blood runs gold. And she must face the consequences. But then a mysterious woman comes to her rescue. And offers her the chance to fight for the emperor in an army of girls like her.

This book is not for everyone – it has a lot of violence. Please check the trigger warnings before reading

A strong female main character, high stakes and a magical school.

An amazing female main character, a college setting and a secret magical society. This is high stakes and the writing reminds me of Fourth Wing.

We follow Bree Mathews. After the death of her mother, she wants to avoid family memories. So, she joins a residential program for gifted high school students.

But then she witnesses a magical attack on her first night. A flying demon feeding on human energy. A Mage tries to wipe her memory. But he fails. And instead Bree unlocks new memories of her mother’s death.

31. Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

A strong female lead, magic and a corrupt government. This is perfect if you love q quest. It also combines a fast-paced plot with magical West Africa inspired world-building.

There used to be magic in Orïsha. Zélie remembers how powerful her reaper mother was. But one-night magic disappears and Zelie is left without hope.

She now has to bring back the magic with the help of a runaway princess. Orïsha is full of danger everywhere. But Zeéie’s greatest danger is herself.

32. The Poppy Wars by R.F. Kuang

The Poppy Wars is perfect if you’re after books with Strong female leads. Rin the main character, endears a lot and is focused on her goal throughout. It also follows a military academy.

Rin aces the Keju – a test to find the most talented youth to learn at Academies. And it was a huge shock when she gets into Sinegard – an elite military school in Nikan.

But surprises aren’t always good.

33. And I darken by Kiersten White

And I Darken features a brutally strong female lead from the onset. Born into a cut-throat world, she is forced to be a fierce character from the start.

No one expects a princess to be brutal. And Lada Dragwyla likes it that way.

Ever since she and her brother were abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman sultan’s courts, Lada has known that ruthlessness is the key to survival. For the lineage that makes her and her brother special also makes them targets.

34. Faebound by Saara El-Arifi

Faebound deserves much more hype. This incredible fantasy is ideal for Fourth Wing fans. It features a strong female lead, magic and rivals to lovers romance

Yeeran is a warrior in the elven army and has known nothing but violence her whole life. Her sister, Lettle, is trying to make a living as a diviner, seeking prophecies of a better future.

When a fatal mistake leads to Yeeran’s exile from the Elven lands, they are both forced into the terrifying wilderness beyond their borders. There they encounter the impossible: the fae court.

35. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

If you enjoyed the characters and romance in Fourth Wing, you should check out The Folk of Air series (The Cruel Prince, Wicked King and Queen of Nothing). This is YA but it has a strong, morally grey heroine and a captivating enemies-to-lovers romance.

We follow Jude. As a child, she gets kidnapped with her two sisters and is taken to live with the fae.  She grows up wanting to be like the wicked fae she lives with

A stunning fantasy romance with an incredible, strong female lead. This high fantasy has magic, adventure and royalty.

In a world where some people are born with a Grace—a unique, sometimes uncanny, skill—Katsa is cursed with a Grace for killing. This makes her a perfect tool for her uncle, King Randa. Katsa chafes at being used as an instrument of punishment. Then she meets Prince Po, and everything changes.

A New Adult fantasy women with a strong, vengeful female lead. We follow a badass, warrior princess.

I was unsure whether to include Air Awakens as I wasn’t a huge fan. But many fans of Fourth Wing and A Court of Thorns and Roses love this book. It features hate to love romance, an amazing female main character and magic.

Vhalla is a library apprentice.  She has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers  – a mysterious magic society. She’s been happy in her quiet world of books. But she unknowingly saves the life of a powerful sorcerer and the crown prince. 

Vhalla discovers a powerful elemental magic lurking within her. A magic that could shift the tides of war.

An action-packed fantasy debut about deadly warrior trials. It also features magic. An excellent read for fans of Fourth Wing.

The Prison Healer is set in a ruthless death prison called Zalindov. We follow Kiva, a prisoner there. As Prison healer, she is charged with keeping the seriously ill Rebel Queen alive long enough to go through the Trial by Ordeal.

Trial by Ordeal is a series of challenges against the torments of air, fire, water and earth. It’s assigned to only the most dangerous criminals.

This reads as a cross between The Hunger Games and The Bachelor. It features a deadly contest and trials.
