Best Fantasy Enemies to Lovers Books
Recently, I asked book lovers on social media for their favourite fantasy enemies to lovers’ book recommendations. I also browsed Reddit and book groups on Facebook for recommendations. Here are some of the most submitted fantasy enemies to lovers books.
YA fantasy enemies to lovers books
1. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
The Folk of Air series (The Cruel Prince, Wicked King and Queen of Nothing) has a captivating enemies-to-lovers romance. Many book lovers list this as their favourite bookish romance. A slow burn romance with a dark, brooding male fae.
We follow Jude. As a child, she gets kidnapped with her two sisters and is taken to live with the fae. She grows up wanting to be like the wicked fae she lives with.
This is an incredible series with a badass female lead and excellent court intrigue.
But the enemies to lovers romance makes this stand out. A true hate to love romance with a brooding, morally grey love interest.

2. A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
This compelling retelling feature an adorable enemies-to-lovers romance with a badass main character and a cursed prince.

Emberfall is cursed into an everlasting winter. Prince Rhen needs to make a girl fall in love with him to break the curse.
Harper has cerebral palsy. She tries to save a stranger and is pulled into the world of Emberfall.
Harper is the perfect fantasy heroine – strong but also flawed enough to feel realistic. Despite Harper’s disability – she’s not a character in need of sympathy.
This is the perfect enemies to lovers romance. It takes Harper time to trust Prince Rhen. Rhen has enough inner conflicts to make him a fully developed character. And not just a love interest for Harper.

An Ember in the Ashes features an incredible slow burn enemies-to-lovers romance.

4. Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas
This series includes one of the best hate to love romances. Alongside an awesome female main character and trials.
We follow Celaena Sardothien, an assassin. She is imprisoned in a horrific prison called Endovier. And one day the prince summons her to fight in a competition. The winner will become the king’s assassin.
I love Celaena. Some reviews describe her as arrogant. But I find her confidence refreshing.
The first book has an amazing love triangle with great enemies-to-lovers romance. But later in the series is the most perfect, slow-burn enemies to lovers romance. Sarah J Maas writes a captivating slow burn ‘hate at first sight’ romance.

5. Bitter Frost by Kalin Gow
Bitter Frost is an amazing book featuring memory loss, beautiful forest imagery and of course Fae. It also includes a cute enemies to lovers romance
We follow Breena. She has always dreamed of fairies as though she lived among them.
In her dreams, there was always a handsome but dangerous Prince named Kian. But when she turns sixteen she starts seeing strange creatures. And her best friend Logan becomes very protective.
Then she sees Kian in real life. And he’s intent on carrying her off to Feyland. And although Kian seemed to be her intended – he now hates her.
There were a few elements I didn’t like about this – Breena seemed a bit ‘not like other girls’. There were a few comments on other ‘popular girls’ appearances that I didn’t appreciate and weren’t necessary. But she did feel like a realistic teen girl.

6. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Magic found family and super sassy banter. Six of Crows also features an excellent enemies to lovers romance between Nina and Matthias.
We follow six teenagers living in Ketterdam. Kaz Brekker, a criminal prodigy, is one of the teens. He is offered an impossible heist for a huge payout.
But Kaz will need all the help he can get to pull it off. So he assembles five other teens to help him.
Nina and Matthias are both fully developed characters with flaws and plenty of growth. After reading their backstory it’s almost impossible not to root for them. Nina is incredibly feisty and sassy while Matthias is grumpy.
There is also an angsty, slow-burn romance between Kaz and Inej. There is a definite ‘will they, won’t they’ vibe And Kaz is a dark, brooding figure.

7. An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson
A standalone fantasy with cottagecore vibes and a compelling enemies to lovers romance.
We follow Isobel, she creates stunning portraits for the dangerous fair folk. One day she creates a portrait of the Autumn Prince. But she makes a deadly mistake. And paints humanity in his eyes.
I loved the imagery in this. And the focus on art and crafts in the book. Isobel is down-to-earth, practical and kind.
If you love the romance in The Cruel Prince – I think you’ll enjoy this one. It has an enemies-to-lovers romance. And I also love how ruthless the fae are.
Highly recommend if you’re after ya fantasy enemies to lovers books.

The Iron King will divide readers. But personally, I loved it. Meghan is a great heroine. She’s not perfect but a realistic 16-year-old.
It includes an enemies to lovers romance. It isn’t slowburn and feels more insta-lovey. But still a compelling romance worth reading.

This is an angsty slow burn romance. Lina and Eva had an amazing grumpy/sunshine dynamic. The setup made this story so tragically romantic.

10. Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin
Serpent and Dove is an excellent pick for anyone looking for enemies to lovers romance. It features a slow-burn romance between a witch and a witch hunter.
We follow Louise, a witch living in Cesarine where witches are hunted and burned. Reid, a witch hunter, has always lived by the same principle – thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
But Lou pulls a stunt and forces them into an impossible scenario – holy matrimony.
This has so many tropes that I enjoy – enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience and morally grey characters. And it’s topped off with an well developed magic system and easy to read writing. An incredible fantasy romance.

16. A Broken Blade by Melissa Blair
A Broken Blade is a romantasy with an enemies to lovers romance, fae and an assassin. It also has an excellent, morally grey main character.
We follow Keera, a killer. As the King’s Blade, she is the most talented spy in the kingdom. And the King’s favoured assassin. When a mysterious figure called the Shadow starts moving against the Crown, Keera is forced to hunt the masked menace down.

15. Crescent City by Sarah J Maas
Fan of spice and enemies to lovers romance? Then you’ll love Crescent City. It features a steamy hate at first sight romance.
We follow Bryce, she is half-fae, half-human. And she is tasked with investigating a series of crimes with Hunt Athalar – a fallen angel. But they discover some dark powers at work.
Let me tell you – I was on the edge of my chair reading this. Sarah J Maas poses a number of mysteries at the start. And these hook you in.
The romance is excellent. A Super sassy main character and a grumpy male love interest. Both characters grow and learn from each other. Sarah J Maas writes strong sassy female leads very well. And Bryce is an incredible main character. But all the side characters were very well developed.

16. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
The ACOTAR series is one of the most popular fantasy enemies to lovers books. And for a good reason. This retelling features unexpected plot twists, a steamy romance and an incredible love interest.
We follow Feyre. She is poor and lives with her father and two sisters. She has to hunt to care for the family.
One day she sees a deer and can’t resist killing it to sell. But it was actually a faerie she murdered. And the owner comes to kidnap her to live at the castle as punishment.
It is a bit slow. Sarah J Maas does dump a lot of information about the fantasy world on you. But stay with it – I promise you it gets so much better. The second book is the best in the series.
If you enjoyed the romance elements in Crescent City then you’ll love this trilogy. It has one of the best enemies to lovers romances. Are you an acotar fan? Then I highly recommend checking out the Fantasy Fangirls podcast. They do a deep dive on the ACOTAR series with theories and entertaining banter.

17. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
This is one the most popular books on this list. If you’re an ACOTAR fan, you’ll love this series. It features trials, dragons, and an enemies-to-lovers romance.
We follow Violet Sorrengail. She was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant and live a quiet life among books. But the commanding general – her mother – orders Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become elite dragon riders.
But Violet is smaller than everyone else, with a brittle body. And with fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success.
This is one of the top fantasy enemies to lovers books. Highly recommend!

We follow Oraya, the adopted daughter of the Nightborn vampire king. She carved her place in a world designed to kill her. Her only chance to become something more than prey is entering the Kejari: a legendary tournament held by the goddess of death herself.
This is a fast-paced, addictive read full of plot twists. The shorter trials paired with the longer mystery, kept me hooked until the very end. The slow burn romance spices up the storyline. Rhysand fans will love the morally grey love interest.

19. One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
I picked this up when it was picked as monthly book for the fantasy book club I attend. And I’m glad this was recommended.
A high fantasy with a unique magic system, a gothic atmosphere and a romantic sub-plot. Set between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice, One Dark Window is an excellent winter fantasy read.
In Blunder all magic comes at a price. We follow Elspeth. She touches a magical providence card and is possessed by the Nightmare.
When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure Blunder from the dark magic infecting it.
This is such an atmospheric read. Spooky, nightmarish and gothic. The magic system is unique compared to other fantasy books and made for such interesting reading.
One Dark Window was marketed as an enemies-to-lovers romance but it’s much more than that. This is a must-read for fans of gothic fantasy books.

This is an entertaining paranormal romance. The mystery, politics and worldbuilding make this an addictive read.

21. From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
From Blood and Ash is a popular pick for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses. And I’m not surprised. It features a compelling enemies to lovers romance.
We follow Poppy. She was chosen from birth to usher in a new era as the Maiden. And her life has never been her own.
The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched or looked upon or spoken to. And never to experience pleasure. But she would rather be fighting back evil than preparing to be found worthy by the gods.
The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders. So when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard, enters her life. Destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need.
An enemies to lovers romance, a strong female main character and its new adult. A great choice if you’re looking for fantasy romance books with spice.

This dark fantasy features a romance between a morally grey, powerful angel and someone who is not quite human.
If you’re looking for fantasy enemies to lovers books you will love this book. It has a great romance but there is still a mystery and strong plot. The heroine is also a strong female main character reminscent of the heroines in Sarah J Maas’ books.

Urban fantasy enemies to lovers books
23. A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth
This is one of my top fantasy books! A Dark and Hollow Star is an urban fantasy, with fae, queer main characters and a wlw romance.
A series of gruesome murders threatens to expose the faerie world to humans. Four queer teens – Nausicaä, Arlo, Vehan, and Aurelian – each hold a piece of the truth. And they must track down the mysterious killer.
There are not one but two romances in this book. And the characters are what make them so perfect. I personally love Arlo and Nausicaä. Nausicaä is a grumpy, chaotic and sarcastic lesbian. Arlo and Nausicaä have a perfect grumpy/sunshine slow-burn vibe.
The other pairing is Vehan and Aurelian. Vehan is the perfect cinnamon roll character ( a character who is super sweet but faces more hardship than they deserve). He is Prince of Seelie court and just wants to protect others. Aurelian is his incredibly grumpy and stoic protector

24. We set the dark on fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia
This book features one of the best wlw enemies to lovers romances that I’ve read!
We follow Daniela Vargas. She lives in a dystopian world where each man is entitled to 2 wives. A Primera and a Segunda. The Primera is intelligent, calm and analytical. The Segunda is the mother figure.
Outside the wall, the people go hungry. Dani started life outside of the wall. And she must use her wits to survive illegally in the capital. She is also married to one of the most powerful men in the kingdom.
The premise was intriguing. But the romance is what makes this so perfect. Two badass women who are married to a Straight man but fall in love with each other.

25. Cinder by Marissa Meyer
A fantasy retelling set in a post-apocalyptic world. It features an intriguing mystery and an excellent enemies to lovers romance.
We follow Cinder. She had an accident when she was younger. And she now has a cyborg hand and ankle. But the world she lives in shuns androids.
There is also a deadly plague that is affecting the world.
She meets and falls in love with the Prince. But she can’t tell him that she’s an android.
The pace was perfect and I couldn’t put this one down. It opens straight away. And you gradually learn more about the world.

26. Shatter me by Tahereh Mafi
Shatter me opens with the main character locked up for murder. She is unable to touch anyone. And she falls in love with the first person she is able to touch.
The writing style in Shatter me is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. It’s very prose heavy. And consequently, it seems to be a book people either love or hate. I love it.
It’s set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world. But it’s definitely more of a romance. And an ansgty one at that. There was a definite ‘will they, won’t they vibe. Similar to Kaz and Inej for me.
Juliette is an excellent main character. She has been dealt an awful hand in life. And yet she still perseveres and looks for the best in everyone.

27. Crier’s War by Nina Varela
Crier’s War is an epic urban fantasy novel with a sapphic enemies to lovers romance. It’s set in the Kingdom of Rabu and follows Ayla.
A War has ravaged the kingdom of Rabu. The Automae took over the estates of their owners and bent the human race to their will.
Ayla is a human servant who is rising the ranks at the House of Soverign. She dreams of avenging the death of her family… by killing the Sovereign’s daughter – the beautiful Lady Crier.
This is a slow burn romance, but the payoff is worth reading this. Both characters are true enemies, on either side of a war. And they both learn from each other through the course of the book. The dual POV works perfectly and gives the reader true insight into each character.

28. The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
An excellent enemies to lovers romance. The Red Queen is a #1 New York Times bestselling series. And I can see why. A fast-paced adventures with a compelling romance and excellent writing.
In this dystopian novel, blood defines your status. Reds are commoners. But silvers are the elite and have superpowers. The main character is red. But she has superpowers.
The Red Queen has received over a million reviews on GoodReads, and is still rated 4 stars. Fans love the fast-pace, plot twists and dystopian worldbuilding.
The plot and the twists in this book left me on the edge of my seat! A thrilling read. It does feature a love triangle of sorts, but it is well-executed and makes you keep reading.
While this is similar to other dystopian novels, this is still worth reading. It features many twists and elements I didn’t see coming. And the worldbuilding and magic system are excellent.

29. A Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell
A Sky Without Stars is a dystopian science fiction book and a Les miserable retelling. It features an enemies-to-lovers romance and a love triangle.
It’s set in a dystopian world called Laterre. When the Last Days came, the planet of Laterre promised hope. But now an elite class reigns. A rebel group is resurfacing.
It follows three characters Chatine, Alouette and Marcellus. And they all play a role in the revolution.
I definitely think the authors are Eponine fans. Chatine gets the most development out of the three main characters. She is a bit ‘not like other girls’. But I rooted for her because of her tragic backstory.
I Listened to the audiobook version of this. It uses 3 different voices for each of the main characters. This makes it really easy to follow the different points of view.

30. The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas
Did you grow up reading the Percy Jackson series? Then you’ll love this book. A fantasy series with Hunger Games vibes and an enemies to lovers romance.
Set in a world where the Mexican Gods and Goddesses are real. And they had children – the semidioses.
As each new decade begins, the Sun’s power must be replenished to that Sol can keep travelling along the sky and keep the Obsidian gods at bay. Ten semidioses aged between thirteen and eighteen are chosen as the most worthy to compete in The Sunbearer Trials.
This is ideal for fans of ‘will they, won’t they romance’. The slow-burn romance leaves you guessing. This is paired with trials, a thrilling mystery and a fast-paced plot.

31. Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning
Darkfever is an urban fantasy featuring fae and vampires. It also has a morally grey dark haired male love interest and a sassy human protagonist. The series features a slow burn romance that takes a few books to develop.
We follow Mackayla. She lives a relatively normal life until her sister is brutally murdered. She journeys to Ireland in search of answers.
But Mac is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to master a power she had no idea she possessed.
I loved this book and I completely understand why book lovers would enjoy this.
However, some of the characters did annoy me. Mackayla was portrayed as a barbie and Barrons is manipulative. The book was clearly published in the noughties and I couldn’t take the descriptions of Mackayla’s ‘expensive Juicy Couture bag’ seriously.

33. Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire
This is an excellent choice if you’re after enemies to lovers romance or books like the Dresden FIles.
Discount Armageddon is the first book in the Incryptid Series. We followVerity Price. Her family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world and protecting them from humanity.
But Verity Price is not interested in a career as a cryptozoologist. She’d rather pursue a career in ballroom dance. Sounds simple right?
It would be, if it weren’t for the talking mice, the telepathic mathematicians, the asbestos supermodels, and the trained monster-hunter sent by the Price family’s old enemies, the Covenant of St. George.
When a Price girl meets a Covenant boy, high stakes, high heels, and a lot of collateral damage are almost guaranteed.

34. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure whether to include this. It was recommended and it’s a popular choice. However, the romance is a bit more insta-lovey. But the romance is definitely an enemies to lovers with 2 characters from very different worlds.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone follows Karou. She has 2 lives which she has always managed to keep balanced. On one hand, she’s a seventeen year old art student living in Prague. On the other hand, she runs errands for a monster.
But then black hand prints start appearing on doorways. Scorched there by winged creatures. And Karou must choose between the safety of her human life or war.
If you’re looking for books with characters like Rhysand then this is a great choice. Particularly if you’re looking for books with mythical creatures. This book features angel and chimera. It also has slightly darker tone for a fantasy novel.
