A Court of Thorns and Roses is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. It follows Feyre. She is really poor and lives with her father and two sisters. She has to hunt to care for the family.
One day she sees a deer and can’t resist killing it to sell. But it was actually a faerie she murdered. And the owner comes to kidnap her to live at the castle as punishment.

2. One for my Enemy by Olivie Blake (Romeo & Juliet)
One For My Enemy is an urban fantasy retelling of Romeo & Juliet. This standalone has witches, romance and magic.
Set in New York, two rival witch families fight to maintain control of their criminal ventures. On one side of the conflict are the Antonova sisters, each one beautiful, cunning, and ruthless.On the other side, the influential Fedorov brothers serve their father, the crime boss known as Koschei the Deathless.

4. Elektra by Jennifer Saint (Trojan War)
Are you a fan of Greek Mythology? Then I highly recommend checking out Jennifer Saint’s work. Araidne and Elektra are both Greek Mythology retellings. The pacing and characterisation are both excellent.
The House of Atreus is cursed. A bloodline tainted by a generational cycle of violence and vengeance. This is the story of three women, their fates inextricably tied to this curse, and the fickle nature of men and gods.
Clytemnestra is the sister of Helen, wife of Agamemnon – her hopes of averting the curse are dashed when her sister is taken to Troy by the feckless Paris. I couldn’t write a post on retellings without mentioning Madeline Miller’s work. Fans of Greek Mythology need to check out her retellings. Song of Achilles is a popular fantasy retelling and romance.
This Greek Mythology retelling focuses on the heart-breaking romance between Achilles and Patroclus. Likewise, the ending will devastate you.
We follow Achilles and Patroclus. Handsome Achilles charms everyone he meets. While Patroclus is an awkward young prince exiled from his homeland.

6. Princess of the Broken by Jasmine K. Swinburne (Rapunzel)
A fast-paced Rapunzel retelling full of suspense. Despite knowing the original fairytale, this leaves you on the edge of your seat. Magical, eerie and fast-paced.

8. The Bear and The Nightingale by Katherine Arden (Several Russian fairytales)
A popular retelling with descriptive prose. The plot is slow but if you enjoy slower pace, beautiful writing and folklore then you’ll love this trilogy.
At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind. She spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales.

This is an adult retelling of the King Midas Myth. With beautiful worldbuilding this has a lot of sexual scenes. It is also very divisive with reading either loving or hating this book. Please make sure you check the trigger warnings before reading.
Set in a world where ones with power rule. Gold floors, gold walls, gold furniture, gold clothes. In Highbell, in the castle built into the frozen mountains, everything is made of gold. We follow Auren, rescued from the slums by King Midas.

12. Dance with the Fae Prince by Elise Kova (Cinderella)
A new adult retelling of Cinderella with fae. With a unique world, fae and magic. The romance is angsty and slow burn.
Katria swore she’d never fall in love. She’s seen what “love” means through the cruelty of her family. So when she’s married off to the mysterious Lord Fenwood for a handsome price, all Katria wants is a better life than the one she’s leaving. Feelings are off the table.
But her new husband makes not falling in love difficult.

14. A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer (Beauty and the Beast)
A Beauty and the Beast retelling with an incredible disabled main character. It includes an adorable enemies-to-lovers romance, magic and cursed prince.
A Curse So Dark And Lonely is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Prince Rhen is the Heir of Emberfall.
Emberfall is under a curse and the kingdom is enchanted into an everlasting winter. Prince Rhen needs to make a girl fall in love with him to break the curse.

15. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa (Midsommer Night’s Dreame)
The Iron King is an incredible YA Fantasy book with fae, enemies to lovers romance and a strong female lead. This book takes many characters from classic literature and myths (such as a Midsommer Night’s Dreame) and retells them in a YA context.
The Iron King follows 16-year-old Meghan Chase. Her father disappeared mysteriously when she was six years old. And ever since, something has been off.
But things start to change drastically. And Meghan will have to learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she truly cares about.

16. Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron (Cinderella)
A Cinderella retelling with a sapphic romance. Set in a dystopian society, the plot is engaging and the woodland imagery is beautiful.
The premise is that teen girls are now required to appear at an annual ball where men select wives. But Sophia wants to marry her childhood best friend Erin. And isn’t a fan of the whole parade in front of suitors thing.
She decides to flee and decided to take down the king once and for all.

17. Ash by Malinda Lo (Cinderella)
Ash is a beautiful Sapphic retelling of Cinderella. First published in 2009, the cottagecore worldbuilding is enchanting and the exploration of grief adds depth to the story.
We follow Ash who is dealing with the grief of losing her parents. She falls in love with the king’s huntress.
I love that it focuses on Ash recovering from grief. Mental health is a strong theme throughout and the romance feels secondary. This cosy read offers great escapism.

18. Cinder by Marissa Meyer (Cinderella)
Cinder is a unique retelling set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic society. The main character is an android and the sci-fi elements blend perfectly with the fairytale.
Cinder had an accident when she was younger. And she now has a cyborg hand and ankle. But the world she lives in shuns androids.
She meets and falls in love with the Prince. But she can’t tell him that she’s an android.

19. Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas (Cinderella)
Throne of Glass is a loose retelling of Cinderella. Sarah J Maas cited the fairytale as inspiration for this incredible series. It has a sassy, strong female lead, trials and romance.
Throne of Glass follows Celaena Sardothien who is imprisoned in a horrific prison called Endovier. She is an assassin. And one day she is summoned by the Prince to fight in a competition. The winner will become the king’s personal assassin.

20. Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim (The Wild Swans)
Six Crimson Cranes is a beautiful retelling of The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersson. It effortlessly blends East Asian worldbuilding and folklore into the story, giving it a fresh update.

I wasn’t sure what category to put this book into. But this is a horror fantasy and gothic retelling. With layered characters and depictions of trauma.
Marlinchen and her two sisters live with their wizard father in a city shifting from magic to industry. As Oblya’s last true witches, she and her sisters are little more than a tourist trap as they treat their clients with archaic remedies. But at night, Marlinchen and her sisters sneak out to enjoy the city’s amenities, particularly the recently established ballet theater, where Marlinchen meets a dancer who quickly captures her heart.
As Marlinchen’s late-night trysts grow more fervent and frequent, so does the threat of her father’s rage and magic.

35. A Ruin of Roses by K.F. Breene (Beauty and the Beast)
This is definitely 18+ and a spicy twist on the classic fairytale. This is fast-paced, funny and full of explicit scenes.
Set in a kingdom locked in time. The only one keeping this kingdom alive is Nyfain, the golden prince to a stolen throne. And the last dragon shifter. He watched the main character trespassing and takes her back to the castle as his prisoner.
Highly recommend for fans of dark fantasy retellings.

A series of dark but beautiful short stories inspired by fairytales. Fans of gothic horror will love this collection of sensual short stories.
From familiar fairy tales and legends – Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots, Beauty and the Beast, vampires and werewolves.
The collection is eerie and beautifully written. And the advantage of short stories is that you can read them in one sitting. Perfect if you’re in a reading slump.
