Books about dragons
1. The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkein
The Hobbit is another absolute classic. There are many similarities between Eragon and The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings. Sp, if you’re looking for books similar to Eragon, this is a starting point.
I recommend The Hobbit great starting point over the Lord of the Rings. This fantasy standalone novel has a simple but engaging storyline. And a well paced plot.
We follow Bilbo Baggins. He is A Hobbit who lives in The Shire. One day he meets Gandalf and goes on an adventure.
The Hobbit the most charming adventure story. Also, the imagery in the hobbit – particularly around food is lovely. I want to be able to eat seven meals a day much like a hobbit.
The Hobbit is such a cosy, comforting book. It’s not as long and drawn out as Lord of the Rings. And it’s a light-hearted read. If you’re looking for books similar to Eragon then this is a great place to start!
I absolutely love all the mythical creatures in Tolkein’s work – Elves, Orcs and Dragons. They are written so well. If you’re looking for more books with mythical creatures I have a ton of recommendations for you. You can check out my post on fantasy books with mythical creatures here.

2. Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
Six Crimson Cranes is an incredible YA Fantasy book. It also features a quest, magic and dragons.
We follow Shiori. She is the only princess in Kiata. Shiori lives in a land where magic is banned. And demons are locked away inside a mountain. But forbidden magic runs through her veins.
Shiori normally conceals it. But on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, she loses control. And she attracts the attention of her stepmother Raikama.
Raikama possesses dark magic. She banishes the young princess. And turns her brothers into cranes. Shiori must speak of it to no one. For with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die.
As well as a curse and forbidden magic, this book features dragons. I would have liked to know more about the dragons. But the worldbuilding in this book is exquisite. Especially when Shiori is in Iro. The images of snow-capped mountains and eating hot buns in the snow is beautiful.

Quest, dragons, magic

3. Fire with Fire by Destiny Soria
Fire with Fire is very similar to Eragon. In particular, the bond Eragon has with Saphira. We follow a girl as she meets a dragon and forms a friendship with it.
We follow Dani and Eden Riviera. They were both born to slay dragons. And they couldn’t be more different. Dani wants a normal life and let’s training take a backseat. While training is always Eden’s priority. But they’ve always agreed on one thing — with dragons its either kill or be killed.
That is until Dani meets a dragon. And forges a rare magical bond with him.
The characters are what made this book for me. Both of the sisters are really strong, badass female leads. But I also found it really refreshing to read about a sibling rivalry.
The side characters were also all pretty well developed. And I enjoyed the urban fantasy setting because it made it really easy read.
Similarities to Eragon:
Dragons, friendship/bond with a dragon

4. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
How could I discuss books with dragons, and not mention Fourth Wing. If you enjoyed the bond with dragons in Eragon, then you need to read Fourth Wing.
We follow Violet Sorrengail. She was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant and live a quiet life among books. But the commanding general – her mother – orders Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become elite dragon riders.
But Violet is smaller than everyone else, with a brittle body. And with fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success.
This has lots in common with Eragon. Magic, high-stakes, rebellion and dragons. Plus the dragons also speak into the dragon riders’ minds. Very reminiscent of Eragon.
Similarities to Eragon:
Dragons, bond with a dragon, high-stakes, magic

Books with mythical creatures
5. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Fans of Eragon will love this ya fantasy book. It features a range of mythical creatures. It is more of a romance. But still an excellent fantasy book.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone follows Karou. She has 2 lives which she has always managed to keep balanced. On one hand, she’s a seventeen year old art student living in Prague. On the other hand, she runs errands for a monster.
But then black handprints start appearing on doorways. Scorched there by winged creatures. And Karou must choose between the safety of her human life or war.
If you’re looking for books similar to Eragon then this is a great choice. Particularly if you’re looking for books with mythical creatures. This book features angel and chimera. It also has slightly darker tone for a fantasy novel.
Similarities to Eragon:
mythical creatures, fast paced adventure story, magic

6. Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
Legendborn is one of my top ya fantasy books to read! And it’s perfect for Eragon fans. It features mythical creatures, magic and mystery.
An action-packed plot and plenty of twists and turns. It has the competition element. And it also has an awesome main character.
Legendborn follows Bree Mathews. After the death of her mother, she wants to avoid family memories. So, she joins a residential program for gifted high school students.
But then she witnesses a magical attack on her first night. A flying demon feeding on human energy. A Mage tries to wipe her memory. But he fails. And instead Bree unlocks new memories of her mother’s death.
You should read this if you love a high-stakes fantasy book, morally grey characters or plot twists. It also features great commentary on slavery and racism.
Similarities to Eragon:
mythical creatures, political intrigue, rich fantasy world, fast paced plot, high stake

7. Gilded Ones by Namina Forna
This book features a range of mythical creatures very similar to dragons. Perfect for Eragon fans. Plus the fast-paced plot moves quickly. Making this an addictve read.
We follow 16-year-old Deka. She lives in a village where all the girls undergo a blood ceremony. If their blood runs gold – they are impure.
Deka has lived in fear of this ceremony. And on the day – her blood runs gold. And Deka must face consequences worse than death.
But then a mysterious woman comes to her rescue. And offers her the chance to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her.
There is so much to love about this book. The found family trope works very well. Ideal if you loved the friendships in Eragon. The magic system was also intriguing and the world-building was excellent.
This book is not for everyone – it has a lot of violence. Please check the trigger warnings before reading
Similarities to Eragon:
mythical creatures, political intrigue, rich fantasy world, fast paced plot, high stakes

8. Forbidden Forest by Tenaya Jayne
Did you enjoy the Elves in Eragon? Then you need to read Forbidden Forest. With a unique concept and intriguing premise.
It follows Forest. She is born in shame as a half-Elf and half Shapeshifter hybrid. She has to work tirelessly to earn respect.
So she takes a job on earth guarding a portal. But she is asked to take on a mission to transport the vampire prince through enemy ground. And Forest has to conquer her prejudices to succeed.
There is lots to love about this book. I enjoyed the elves in a more urban setting. And the idea that vampires can take control of someone they bite was intriguing.
It’s not perfect. It falls into the trap of ‘telling not showing’ at times. Also, it would probably work better as a new adult novel rather than young adult. But it was still an enjoyable read.
Similarities to Eragon:

Books with a rich fantasy world
9. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Looking for books similar to Eragon? Searching for a rich fantasy world? Then you should check out Throne of Glass. Sarah J. Maas dominates the fantasy book world but for a good reason. Her books are seriously binge-worthy.
That said, sometimes her books dump a lot of world-building at the start. This can make it hard for some people to get into them. Throne of Glass starts with a bang and hooks you in instantly.
We follow Celaena Sardothien who is imprisoned in a horrific prison called Endovier. She is an assassin. And one day she is summoned by the Prince to fight in a competition. The winner will become the king’s personal assassin.
If you’re looking for a long fantasy book series to get into – then this is the book series for you. It features an incredible slow burn, enemies to lovers romance later in the series

10. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
Ember in the Ashes is such an incredible ya fantasy book. It features a high-stakes quest and a rich fantasy world.
An Ember in the Ashes opens with Laia. She has found an illegal sketchbook belonging to her brother. The empire comes and takes away her brother. So she must locate the resistance and go on a perilous mission to save him.
The book opens with a punch and it’s fast-paced throughout. The opening makes you emotionally invested. Laia goes to extraordinary lengths and becomes a slave in order to save her brother. There is so much at stake that it leaves you on the edge of your seat.

Books with epic quests
11. Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson is a popular series that got many bookworms into reading. And for good reason. Plus this series is ideal for Eragon fans as it features a high-stakes quest and mythical creatures.
The concept is that the Greek Gods are real. And they occasionally fall in love with mortals. They have children who become demigods. The world of Greek Mythology is kept a secret from humans.
We follow Percy Jackson. He is having trouble focusing on his schoolwork. When one day his maths teacher turns into a monster.
And so mum decides it’s time to tell him the truth. His father is a Greek God. And she sends him to camp Half blood – a summer camp for demigods.
Greek Mythology is woven seamlessly into this book. And it balanced Greek Mythology with urban fantasy elements perfectly. Disney Plus are adapting this book series into a fantasy book series. So if you haven’t read it – then you seriously should.
The Percy Jackson book series features one of the best hidden worlds. If you’re looking for more books about hidden worlds then you’re in luck. I have a whole blog post full of recommendations. You can check out my post on books about hidden worlds here.

12. The Bright and the Pale by Jessica Rubinowski
This is an underrated fantasy book with an intriguing quest. The richly-described wintery world-building make this book stand out. Plus it features a thieves guild and an excellent morally grey protagonist.
We follow 17-year-old Valeria. As a child, she lived near this magical mountain. One day, it unleashed a big freeze that trapped her family. Valeria is one of few survivors.
So she flees and joins the thieves guild. And she does odd jobs to get by with her best friend Alik. Until he is brutally murdered.
Or so she thinks. A year later, he turns up alive. And she is forced to lead a group on a dangerous quest back to the mountain in exchange for Alik.
The world-building was truly enchanting. It’s heavily inspired by Russian folklore. But the winter setting added another layer to it. The two gods concept was intriguing but also quite creepy.
Similarities to Eragon:
Chosen one, epic quest, high stakes
Buy on Amazon | Waterstones
13. Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
Children of Blood and Bone combines a action-packed quest with magical West Africa inspired world-building. The book opens in a world where magic has disappeared. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a rich fantasy world and a high-stakes quest.
There used to be magic in Orïsha. Zélie remembers how powerful her reaper mother was. But one-night magic disappears and Zelie is left without hope.
She now has to bring back the magic with the help of a runaway princess. Orïsha is full of danger everywhere. But Zeéie’s greatest danger is herself.
This book has much in common with Eragon. A high-stakes quest, magic and a fast-paced plot. The rich worldbuilding enchants the reader and transports you to a magical world.
But Children of Blood and Bone also explores much darker themes such as racially charged violence. And that makes it a really powerful read.

Chronicles of Narnia is a magical Children’s classic with tons in common with Eragon. From the magic, newly discovered powers and quest. Plus it also features a war and rebellion.
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is an endearing children’s classic with a magical concept. A Magical wintery world in a wardrobe. A classic winter fantasy book.
Four children are evacuated to a country house. And they find a magical kingdom called Narnia at the back of a wardrobe.
But the White Witch has enchanted Narnia, leaving it frozen in an eternal winter.
